A traditional air conditioning system has two parts: and indoor and outdoor unit, which are designed to work together. The indoor unit is a furnace or air handler. The outdoor unit is composed of a condenser unit that releases heat the refrigerant picks up inside the home.
Matching your air conditioner with a furnace or air handler increases your system life and helps you gain maximum efficiency. Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is the measurement for air conditioning and cooling efficiency. A higher SEER rating means higher energy efficiency, which mean you can substantially lower your home cooling costs. In addition, if you have variable speed motor equipment, this allows for extremely quiet operation and has dehumidifcation capabilities.
A furnace works to keep your home warm in the winter months and plays a critical part in the operation of an air conditioning system. Furnaces produce heat through the combustion of natural gas in the furnace's burner. This heat is then passed through a heat exchanger, which warms the air in your home. The furnace's blower then blows the warm air into your home's duct work, which disperses and carries the air throughout your home. During the warmer months, the blower continues to circulate air through your home, except the air is instead cooled by being blown over the indoor coil portion of your home's split system air conditioning system. This condensing coil is typically installed on top of the furnace.
To get the highest performance and comfort from your central air conditioning or heat pump system, installing the correct evaporator coil is essential. Humidity is removed as indoor air passes through the indoor or evaporator coil, which creates a 'cooler' indoor air. For best performance, it is recommended you install a brand-name coil with a brand-name air conditioner or heat pump system. Having a brand-name system gives you some of the best warranty protection and coverage in the heating and cooling industry.
An air handler or air handling unit (AHU) is a device used to circulate and condition air as part of your HVAC system. An air handler is usually a large metal box containing a blower, heating and/or cooling elements, filter racks or chambers, sound attenuators, and dampers. Air handlers are usually connected to ductwork that distribute the conditioned air through the building, and returns it to the AHU. Sometimes AHUs discharge (supply) and admit (return) air directly to and from the space served, without ductwork.
